How The Sun and Moon Came To Be

by Clay

Long, long ago, the world used to be black. Coyote, a god who lived in the world, was unhappy about this because he could not see the people whom he had created. The people couldn't see either. Coyote decided to let Spider make a huge string sphere. The sphere was on the ground, so Coyote threw it into the sky. Coyote then touched the ball and it instantly lit on fire and it gave off light to everyone. Coyote decided to call the sphere the sun.

A couple of days later, Coyote was thirsty and tired because the sun never went down. Lurai, the chief of the city, went to speak to Coyote. He said, "My people are complaining that they are very hot and thirsty. I suggest that you make the sun go down at night so we can sleep." Coyote thought about this for a wile and told Lurai, "I am going try to make the ball leave at the night." Coyote then made the sphere go down during the night. People still complained because some of them hunted at night and could not see what they were hunting. Coyote also couldn't see what he was hunting either but he didn't really care because he could smell something from a mile away.

Lurai went back to talk to Coyote about how it was now too dark in the night. Coyote said, "I will make a sphere that will light the sky in the night and leave in the morning." He built another huge sphere, not quite as big as the sun because he did not want it to give off too much light. This time though, Coyote made it hollow. Coyote put a candle in this sphere so it would glow. He decided to call this sphere the moon. Sometimes, there was no moonlight because the candle went out. Each time this happened, Coyote had to relight the candle.

Coyote decided he needed someone to look after the sun. He decided to let Spider look over the sun because after all, Spider was the one who made the huge string sphere in the beginning. Then, Coyote soon became tired of watching the moon and went off to find somebody to look over the moon. Coyote could not choose whom to let look over the moon. He talked to Lurai. Lurai said, "You should choose the most willing person." Coyote went to look for someone who would look after the moon but right then, the sun came straight down out of the sky. It was about to hit him, but he dove out of the way. The sun hit the ground with a huge boom. Coyote went to talk to Spider but he was not there. He asked Bear where Spider was and Bear said, "Spider ran away because the sun fell." Coyote asked Bear if he wanted to look over the sun. Bear said he would and both of them lifted the sun up into the sky.

While Coyote was walking, he heard a little voice that said, "I can look over the moon for you." Coyote looked down but he did not see anything. He kept on looking and again heard the voice say "let me look over the moon." Coyote looked down again, but didn't see anything. He kept looking for someone to look over the moon and heard the voice again. This tim, when Coyote looked to see who had spoken, he discovered that the voice was coming from a tiny worm on the ground. "You are too small worm." Coyote said, but still he followed him. "Fine I will let you look over the moon, but you will have to live on it." Coyote said. Coyote made some steps up to the moon and worm slowly went up them. Worm had to build a dwelling on the moon so he dug a lot of huge holes. That is why the moon has holes in it. From then on the moon or sun never fell again.

That is how the sun and the moon came to be.
