How the Moon Came
to Be

Long, Long ago, there was a godess who ruled the sky. Her name was Mother Sky. She was a beautiful godess, not to mention a fair and kind individual. She was slim and tall and had brown hair that fell to her knees, but the wind would often twist it and blow it around. Her husband, Father Earth, was a cold man who agitated easily, had everything his way, and above all was the most powerful of all the Gods. They were very unhappy with him, but had a new favorite god, Mother Sky. That meant that she had to carry most of the gods' responsibilities. Her biggest problem was that at night it was completely dark. Mother Sky's job was to find light. Mother Sky was in the dark night. She had been thinking about what she would do about finding light. She soon knew what she had to do. She also knew it would be a long journey. The next day Mother Sky went to Father Earth and asked for a big ball of light. "I do not have a big ball of light,'' said Father Earth, eating while he spoke. Mother Sky went home and thought. Then she came up with a brilliant plan. The next sun, Mother Sky went to Father Earth. This time Mother Sky asked for two willing souls. Then, back in a flash was Father Earth with two men, one elderly man with a goatee and short black hair and the other, and a young man with hair as brown as a baby bear's, and the same color of his bushy eyebrows. Mother Sky took them, and put them to work. One had to find a gigantic lemon, and the other had to find about a million fireflies to put inside the lemon. Soon after these items were found, Mother Sky went to Father Earth and asked for two strong, willing souls. This time, Father Earth was agitated. "What is wrong with the two willing souls you have now?'' They have worked too hard, Mother Sky said as she combed her long brown hair. So, Father Earth reluctantly stroked his eyebrows and came back with two strong willing souls. Mother Sky soon put them to work. It was the most backbreaking work anyone could imagine. They had to hoist the lemon up past the clouds and the tip of the heavens. So once they got up past the heavens, they tied it between two of the biggest, brightest stars that they could find. Soon after that they called it the moon. They all wanted to name it after themselves, but they decided that was not fair. One man said they should call it the Lurchak. But, no one liked that name, so they called it the moon, which is an ancient god. But, alas, this was too perfect. They said that on some nights they did not need to use the bright moon, for the stars would give enough light to one or two villages. So it was decided that they needed something smaller on some occasions, and they would use a banana for the job. That is why we have different moons every night. So, whenever you see the faces on the moon, be grateful to those four brave, willing souls that gave the world light. |
